Bedoba Saperavi 2021
Saperavi

I wasn’t expecting to discover something new over a Sunday roast—but then again, I’d never been to Land of the Lore, Guy Ritchie’s pub in Fitzrovia. Among the usual suspects on the wine list, one bottle stood out: Bedoba Saperavi 2021, a red from Georgia—a country I’d never tried wine from before. I was curious, so I went for it.
Saperavi is Georgia’s signature red grape, and Bedoba (which means “faith”) is all about showing what it can do. From the first pour, it was deep and inky, almost opaque. The nose was intense—black cherry, plum, and some earthy, spicy undertones that reminded me of Syrah or Malbec, but with its own personality.

The taste? Bold and structured, with loads of dark fruit and a slightly rustic edge. It had the savouriness and texture of old-world wines, but with a punch of power and fruit more common in new-world styles. There’s a freshness too, with acidity that cuts through richness—perfect with a roast.
If you’re up for trying something off the beaten path, Bedoba Saperavi 2021 is well worth a go. I’m definitely keeping my eye out for more from this region.
Definitely a wine for lovers of big, expressive reds. It’s drinking beautifully now, but still has the legs to go another 5–10 years.
