Bellingham 'The Bernard Series' Viognier 2018

Viognier

Summer Wine

The Viognier grape is most famous for being the sole varietal permitted in Condrieu, a French wine region or AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) in Northern Rhone. Condrieu is known for producing aromatic white wines in a full bodied and rich style with low acidity. In the New world, Viognier has been shown to be thriving in many wine regions including South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In addition to producing excellent white wine, Viognier is also commonly blended with Shiraz/Syrah to enhance the bouquet, texture and colour of the wine. The most notable regions for this are Cote-Rotie in Northern Rhone, South Australia (Barossa valley and Mclaren Vale) and Santa Barbara County in California. In these blends, Viognier will usually contribute 10-20%.

Bellingham Winery in Franschhoek Valley was established in 1693 but really rose to prominence in 1943 when it was purchased by Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk. They renovated the somewhat derelict farm and restored the manor house and vineyards. With limited knowledge in farming they enlisted a group of Italian POWs to help them replant the vineyards. In addition they travelled through France and Germany to learn different winemaking styles which they brought back to the estate.

This wine is 100% Viognier and is from the ‘Bernard Series’, which is their premium line and tribute to their founder. On the nose there are notes of peach and lychees. It is a full bodied offering with lots of flavours of apricot, pears and cinnamon. The finish is long and smooth with hints of vanilla from the oak aging.

The Bernard series Viognier is a very enjoyable and drinkable wine, perfect for a Summer’s day with some fresh seafood!
